Anxiety & Constipation

Do you struggle with these issues together? Have you ever wondered if you're constipated because you feel anxious? Or has chronic constipation caused you to feel anxious? This is a chicken or the egg scenario and one I am very familiar with.

Looking at your body as an energetic system can help you understand why anxiety and constipation go together. Your root chakra is located at the bottom of your abdomen and encompasses your elimination system. It is easy for this chakra to become imbalanced. When we feel fear/anxiety/insecurity, this is where energy can become lodged. If you feel ungrounded, afraid and/or exhausted, it is challenging to 'let go' and go to the bathroom. Things can get stuck - figuratively and physically - when we are anxious. And this can be soooooo frustrating.

I believe women are susceptible to anxiety, especially after childbirth, because there has been a huge energetic release through the root chakra. Birthing a child is literally birthing oneself into a whole new world as a mother. If we don't have ample support through this transformation and adequate time to rest and recover, anxiety levels can shoot through the roof. And if we aren't aware of how to balance the body's energy (chakra) system, there is a natural tendency for constipation to occur.

There are many products on the store shelves today that claim to relieve occasional constipation. Occasional constipation is one thing, but what I am talking about is an ongoing chronic inability to have an awesome bowel movement- one that leaves you feeling light as a feather, like a puppy in spring bouncing around the yard. Know what I mean?

Here's what I have learned to help promote regular, satisfying, complete elimination:

REST- An exhausted system simply doesn't have the energy to poop. Allow yourself to rest, and then rest some more. Meditation is amazing for this, offering deep nervous system rejuvenation!

COFFEE- While a cup of the magical black bean juice can seem to help spur a run to the toilet, coffee is actually drying in nature and further exacerbates chronic constipation.

HYDRATION- Water is great and gets boring. Try eating your water in the form of sweet, juicy fruits. Fiber, vitamins and sweetness included! Yum. My latest favorites are mangoes, pears & peaches.

HERBS- Balancing your body with Ayurvedic herbs like Triphala can greatly improve your bathroom experience.

EATING FOR YOUR TYPE- Regularly eating the proper foods for your system is essential. Does your body run cold, hot, dry or slow? The specific qualities of the foods you're ingesting affect people differently, depending on your unique constitution. Balancing your system can help relieve anxiety, too!

Here's to your health, happiness, anxiety relief and beautiful poops!
