Limbic System Reset: fight/flight/freeze

Loud sounds made me jump. Bright lights hurt my eyes. The TV volume always felt too loud and perfumes smelled too strong. Recently, going into a store with candles/lotions/air fresheners or a cleaning supply aisle was a race against the clock. I often wondered how other people did it. The vibration from pushing a full Costco cart across the parking lot was too much for my hands and arms and I overreacted to the cold, quickly losing circulation in my fingers or toes. And a slight gnawing feeling overshadowed every decision or move I made. Begrudgingly, thought I was a Highly Sensitive Person with anxiety and that this was just life for me.

Then I discovered what a Limbic Impairment is from the Dynamic Neural Retraining System and my life has been totally changed in the past two weeks!

Here are 10 questions from the DNRS questionnaire to see if you might be experiencing a Limbic Impairment:

1. Do you experience brain fog, or an inability to concentrate or focus?

2. Do you suffer from low energy?

3. Do you suffer from chronic joint and/or muscle pain?

4. Do you find yourself constantly ‘body checking’ for symptoms of pain or discomfort?

5. Do you have a heightened sense of smell or taste?

6. Do you have other heightened sensory perceptions, such as light, sound or

electromagnetic sensitivities?

7. Do perfumes or other chemical products (e.g. household cleaners, personal hygiene

products, paint, adhesives, new textiles or carpets, etc.) give you headaches or make you feel nauseous or lightheaded?

8. Do you get noticeably irritable, anxious, or upset when around specific scents?

9. Have you had your home, office, or other space renovated recently?

10. Do you suffer from anxiety or panic attacks?

I answered yes to all of these and the rest on the questionnaire! Can you relate? I am positive I've had a Limbic Impairment my entire life. Discovering this feels so liberating!

In Ayurveda, I would tie this to a really longstanding Vata (wind/air) imbalance, corrected with proper sleep, meditation, lifestyle and food choices. While I've been working on these things, learning about DNRS and taking the 4-day course has had dramatic effects on my health in less than a week. I love when things have quick results.

Here's what I've noticed so far:

  • Less sensitivity to strong smells. Instead of making my eyes water, my husband's deodorant actually smelled good and my daughter's freshly washed hair did, too!

  • My lungs did not freak out when I smelled diesel fumes from the truck in front of me

  • Increased awareness of negative past thought patterns and now have the tools to redirect them

  • Way more energy and way less anxiety!

  • I feel EMPOWERED to take back my life and regain my health using this simple daily practice.

Limbic impairments are usually triggered by a stressful event such as a move/divorce/job loss/break up/toxic mold exposure/Lyme Disease and many others. My experience included many of these resulting in the "perfect storm" of events.

One valuable thing I've learned from DNRS that it's important not to give your symptoms/triggers/stories much energy anymore, as identifying with your symptoms reinforces those old pathways in your brain. While being authentic about what is happening in my life is incredibly important to me, repeating my illness story or focusing on health symptoms counteracts the Limbic System Retraining approach.

I'm a work in progress but very encouraged about DNRS and highly recommend it if it resonates with what you are experiencing in your life. Can't wait to see how much improvement happens over the next few months!
