The Deer

Updated: Jan 15, 2022

Yesterday on our way to town

We passed a deer

She was laying by the side of the road

At first I couldn’t tell what was happening

But then I saw it clearly

As we buzzed by at 70 mph

Music on the radio

Warm and comfortable in our fancy car

Her terrified eyes caught mine

She had gotten hit by a truck

Her hind legs were covered in blood

Her head frantically looking around

Paralyzed and helpless

She laid there waiting

For what more could she do

My husband called the sheriff’s office

”We will send somebody out to take care of it”

Her life would be taken away

The ultimate sacrifice

Just for someone’s ability

To get to wherever they were going

A mere casualty along the way

A common occurrence on our familiar drive

And on most roads everywhere

I understand it easily could be

My vehicle next time

And that her flesh would feed the birds

But how unfair for her

And how heart wrenching for me to witness

The pure terror in her face

Last week as I was making my way home

From a quiet evening walk

I noticed a beautiful buck standing in the trees

We were so close it startled us both

Too close

Something was wrong

He looked at me with his gentle eyes

Slowly he turned and began to limp away

Disappearing back into the dusk

But not before showing me his injury

The blood stained fur

Clearly revealing a bullet wound

Hunting season had been over for weeks

And yet here he stood

Painfully moving through the fields

This whole time

Needlessly suffering

I am certain he will perish in the winter weather

A desperate sadness infused my heart

Why is it like this here?

Sometimes this world doesn’t make any sense

A lot of times I long to go home

Back to wherever it was I came from

A place that made sense to my soul

Peaceful, harmonious and aligned

As we work to create a better existence

Here on earth

I wish it was happening faster

For the pain witnessed

From humanity’s current way of life

The treatment of our planet

The insurmountable injustice done

To so many living things

Is oftentimes unbearable for me

If you are like me My heart goes out to you For I feel it, too.

Love and peace on earth. Please.
