Have you ever considered the idea that the earth loves you back? That your presence is of utmost importance to the planet? I have tried to live in a state of appreciation for the abundance and ability of the earth to support my life and have also felt somewhat apologetic for existing. As if it was a hindrance on the earth's resources with the rapid population increase and the toll humanity is taking on her. But I realized something on my recent birthday. The message was repeated to me in cards and texts, in the sweet eyes of my family members smiling at me and in the way my reflection looked back at me in the mirror.
While walking on the fresh spring grass, I was saying "thank you...thank you...thank you" with each step. This is a usual habit of mine and one I find quite grounding and humbling. But I jumped up a few inches when I heard her say "thank you for being here" in response.
I have never wanted to be arrogant, lofty, or entitled and so my counteractions have been to try my best to remain quiet and small and appreciative. To retreat into the wild places and show gratitude and reverence for the gift of being alive. And now I am realizing that the earth is delighted by our existence. Truly delighted, like the happiness of a wonderful mother. One who loves watching you grow and expand. One who marvels at your beauty and celebrates your successes and catches you when you fall. One who holds you in her silent prayers and wishes the best possible life for her child. One you love so much it hurts.
One who loves you back.
It's as if you are strolling along the path of your life and turning around to grin at the one who loves you the most.

We are not a problem to be solved. We are a gift to be celebrated.
We are created from a love so powerful it is felt in the sunshine, found in the synchronicities of life's most magical moments, and experienced it in the significance of the small things.
As I read in a poem somewhere, we are the physical creation of life's longing for itself.
To the ones who love you, to the world where you belong:
YOU are the most incredible gift.
